San Miguel boidiversity park promotes eco-tourism

Colombian News - San Miguel

A biodiversity park in San Miguel that is open to the public aims to teach visitors about the importance of preserving the environment.

In the last four years, the municipal government of Medellin has carried out 650 educational activities in the form of guided visits in the wildlife refuge, which was established in 2001, teaching more than 25,000 people about the importance of the Medellin river, and preserving biodiversity.

The refuge is intended for public use, with the Medellin secretary of environment also offering these guided visits as an alternative way to promote eco-tourism in the area.

San Miguel is located in Caldas, 18 miles from the Antioquian capitol Medellin, with a rich diversity of plant and animal life, some close to extinction.

At the site, 162 species of bird, 82 species of mammal, and 12 species of reptile and amphibian can be found, along with 250 types of plant, 46 vertebrates, and 130 species of butterfly.

Those interested in visiting should contact the Medellin environmental secretary.
