Over the last few days up to 60 families were forced to flee their homes in Colombia's northern department of Cordoba following brutal confrontations between two drug trafficking paramilitary gangs.

Colombia's Armed Forces are allegedly regaining control of the region in order to prevent a vast displacement of people, reported newspaper El Universal on Thursday.

The Mayor of Tierralta, the town at the center of the violence, claimed that the bloody clashes are taking place between drug trafficking gang 'Los Rastrojos' and narco-paramilitary group 'Black Eagles'. He also stated that his office had provided a medical team to attend to the displaced families.

According to El Universal, some 600 soldiers have been dispatched to retake control of the area but the situation betrays the ominous resurgence and reorganization of violent gangs in the region.
