Supreme Court again suspends election Prosecutor General

Colombia news - Supreme Court

More than a month after Colombia's former Prosecutor General Mario Iguaran ended his term, the country's Supreme Court again suspended the election of his successor.

The Court is reluctant to elect one of the three candidates picked by President Alvaro Uribe.

The candidates are criticized by NGOs for not having any experience in criminal justice. One of the candidates is suspected of bribery while he was magistrate of the State Council.

After talks with Uribe, who refuses to change the names on his shortlist, the Court now "continues with the reflection and analysis about what will be the profile the new Prosecutor General must have according to the constitution," magistrate Jaime Arrubla diplomatically told newspaper El Espectador.

Without referring directly to the candidates, Arrubla did admit denunciations about the candidates made in media and by NGOs affect the court's inability to decide.
