IACHR says it was spied on by Colombian intelligence agency

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Thursday said it was target of Colombian intelligence operations.

According to information received by the Commission, the DAS monitores activities of the human rights commission "tied to the litigation of cases at the international level."

According to the DAS file in hands of the OAS body, the objective of this operation was "to identify the cases being studied by the Rapporteur and the testimony presented by nongovernmental organizations, as well as the lobbying these organizations are doing to pressure for a condemnation of the State."

"These intelligence activities violate the State’s commitment to respect the privileges and immunities of representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS) and to comply in good faith with the aim and purpose of the American Convention on Human Rights and other treaties of the inter-American system," the IACHR denounced.

The DAS in being investigated, because it allegedly spied on a wide range of people it considered a threat to the government. Among people who allegedly were subjected to illegal interceptions are Supreme Court magistrates, journalists and human rights workers.
