Court to drop case against congressmen for approving re-election referendum

Colombia news - Supreme Court

Colombia's Supreme Court will discontinue its investigation against 86 Representatives of the House who were sued for allegedly illegally approving the referendum needed for the re-election of President Alvaro Uribe, newspaper El Espectador reported on Tuesday.

Opposition Representative German Navas Talero had filed a complaint, claiming that the Representatives approved the bill while the Electoral Council was still investigating possible irregularities in the financing of the project.

According to the newspaper, the Supreme Court has found no evidence that could justify opening a formal investigation against the lawmakers.

The lawsuit caused great distress among the implicated lawmakers, who were afraid of losing their parliamentary seats.
