Uribe is sympathetic to Micheletti government: Honduras Foreign Minister

Colombia news - Carlos Lopes Contreras

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is sympathetic to the de facto government of Honduras, the country's Foreign Minister said Wednesday. Minister Carlos Lopez Contreras met with Uribe in secret Monday.

The new government of Honduras got into power through military coup a few weeks ago, is not recognized by the Organization of American States and the U.S. and has clashed regularly with Colombia's leftist neighbor, Venezuela.

However, Honduran Foreign Minister Carlos Lopez Contreras said he met with the Colombian President on Monday and that Uribe had expressed sympathy for the new government.

According to Lopez, he and Uribe were looking into ways to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Honduras is interested in closer ties with Colombia, because both countries are "victims of common external aggressors, like Hugo Chavez," Lopez said.

Colombia's Foreign Ministry Wednesday confirmed there had been an "informal" meeting with an Honduran delegation, but refuses to comment on Uribe's alleged sympathy for the de facto government of Honduras.
