Former DAS director denies ordering illegal wiretapping

Colombia news - Jorge Noguera

Former DAS director Jorge Noguera denied having ordered any kind of illegal wiretapping, Radio Caracol reported Tuesday.

Colombia's Prosecutor General's office called Noguera and three other former DAS directors for questioning about their alleged involvement in the wiretapping scandal of the intelligence agency.

According to the Prosecution, the illegal monitoring of Supreme Court magistrates, opposition politicians and journalists began when Noguera -- already investigated for paramilitary ties -- was director of the agency.

Noguera also denied having any responsibility for the so-called G-3 unit, an internal group of the DAS created to spy on various social organizations and journalists.

The former directors, Maria del Pilar Hurtado, Andres Peñate, Joaquin Polo and Jorge Noguera, are suspected of seven offenses: conspiracy to commit crime, illegal wiretapping, illegal use of transmitters or receivers, abuse of authority, falsification of public documents, destruction of public documents and fraud.
