Prosecution calls referendum organizers for questioning

Colombia news - Luis Guillermo Giraldo

Colombia's Prosecutor General's Office wants to question eight members of the commission that organized the 2008 referendum on the re-elelection of President Alvaro Uribe about alleged fraud in the process.

The referendum was part of a lengthy process that seeks the 2010 re-election of the President and is subject to controversy because the organization of the referendum has been very untransparant and there are questions about who funded the project and if some of the sponsors donated more than the allowed amount of money.

The organizers are now subject to a preliminary investigation into suspected processional fraud.

Despite the investigation, the referendum has been approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and is only waiting for an inter-chamber commission to cast its last vote on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is investigating coalition Representatives for allegedly approving a bill illegally, because it was still being investigated by both the Electoral Council and the Prosecutor General's Office and the forming of the inter-chamber commission is delayed because opponents and promoters of the project are trying to dimiss eachother from forming the commission.
