Naranjo takes charge of Medellín fight against crime

Colombia news

National Police chief Oscar Naranjo is personally taking charge of fighting crime in Colombia's second largest city Medellín.

Naranjo is moving his office to the capital of Antioquia to personally coordinate police efforts to halt the increasing urban influence of new paramilitary groups like that of 'Don Mario'.

The decision to prioritize Medellín crime was taken after one of President Álvaro Uribe's security council meetings earlier this week.

Naranjo will bring a select group of security officials and part of his Bogotá-based staff to Medellín and will initiate frontal attacks against Medellín's rising murder rate.
