Extrajudicial execution suspects may go free

At least 18 Colombian military officials that are accused of the kidnapping and murder of civilians may go free because the Prosecution isn't indicting them within the time limits.

According to what an anonymous source withing the Prosecutor General's told Spanish press agency Efe, the 18 are accused of four extrajudicial executions that occurred in 2005 and 2006.

"The suspects still haven't been heard, because in some cases judges say they aren't competent to do so. In other cases they say they have an excessive workload or they do not accept to hear suspects of other jurisdictions,"

The same informant says the Human Rights Unit of the Prosecutor General's office is currently handling 716 cases of so-called 'false positives' and over a thousand members of the armed forces are being investigated for their alleged responsibility in extrajudicial execution.
