Suspended Bogota mayor faces fresh corruption allegations

Suspended Mayor of Bogota, Samuel Moreno, faces new allegations that he accepted bribes for awarding public works contracts, adding to his list of corruption and embezzlement charges.

A prosecutor from Colombia's Supreme Court requested a hearing to charge Moreno with accepting bribes while he rotated multiple contracts between part-time workers, also called "carousel recruiting."

"The bribery [charge] signifies that evidence was found [showing] that the mayor solicited some sort of hand-out for the performance of his duties," Prosecutor General Viviane Morales declared.

Moreno was suspended from his post in early May over irregularities in the awarding of public works contracts to the Nule Group construction firm. He has also been accused of accepting bribes from the now-defunct Cali Cartel.
