Ingrid Betancourt granted divorce from husband

A judge in Colombia has dissolved the marriage of Ingrid Betancourt, the former presidential candidate rescued in 2008 from leftist rebels who held her hostage for more than six years.

Betancourt filed for divorce after her rescue. Her now ex-husband, Juan Carlos Lecompte, originally refused to agree to the split with the woman he married in 1997.

The 53-year-old Lecompte demanded a share of royalties from Betancourt’s book, “Even Silence Has An End.”

But he told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the divorce finalized earlier in the day was by mutual consent. He did not say whether he would get any royalties.

Betancourt turns 50 on Christmas Day. She holds both Colombian and French citizenship and lives outside Colombia.
