A leader of Colombia's indigenous Embera population was shot and beheaded Saturday in the northwestern department of Antioquia, according to a report by Caracol Radio.

The Indigenous Organization of Antioquia (OIA) has denounced the killing of the Embera leader, Fabio Domico Domcio, which took place in the indigenous lands of Nendo.

The OIA have accused members of left wing guerrilla group FARC for the killing of the leader, who was the deputy governor of Dabeiba.

In response to the assasination, the OIA stated, "The various armed groups cannot continue killing us. The state and the Colombian government should immediately implement actions to preserve the lives of our leaders and the survival of our community."

The slain indigenous leader was known for his actions on behalf of his communities in promoting health, and for running for the Debeiba Council.

According to the OIA, 19 indigenous leaders have been killed so far this year in the department of Antioquia, six of whom belonged to the Embera indigenous population, and 13 of whom belonged to the Senu population.

The Embera indigenous population consists of approximately 70,000 that inhabit Colombia's west and Panama's east.
