Government denies judicial strike leader's claims of assassination attempt

The Colombian government released a statement Monday stating the president of the judicial workers union, contrary to his claims, was not the victim of an assassination attempt at his home.

Fabio Hernández, the president of Asonal, as the syndicate is known, had told El Tiempo that he and his family were in their living room Sunday night when three men fired upon them three times from outside.

Citing a police report, the government press relase stated the the shooting was carried out “with a shot of shotgun from the property – with the purpose of scaring some presumed suspects – which impacted the window of the house,” reported El Colombiano.

Further details were not available.

The government press release went on to reiterate their proposals to resolve the judicial strike, which is now 20 days old, reported El Tiempo.

Noting the “fiscal difficulties of the country,” the government argued the administration of president Álvaro Uribe had given special attention to the judicial branch, already raising the budget almost 100 percent, a raise that has not been affected by the current budget cuts of 1.5 billion pesos.
