Poverty in Colombia declining: NPD

Poverty in Colombia is decreasing, the National Planning Department (NPD) announced Sunday. The Presidential financial advisory department will release an official report on poverty in the nation at the end of July.

The head of the NPD, Esteban Piedrahita, did not announce any concrete figures but said he feels that today poverty in the country is lower.

"It is very complex to measure poverty [because we] just cannot measure poorness by income but by opportunities and quality of life", the official told Radio Caracol.

The National Planning Department is creating a new framework of measuring poverty which "is more comprehensive, complete and does not give room for suspicion".

The last official report released said that 45 percent of Colombians live in poverty and 12 per cent are homeless.
