Colombia government to control coffee import

Colombia news - coffee

Colombian authorities will supervise coffee imports to meet domestic coffee demand, Colombia's coffee growers federation said Sunday. because of a drop in production, Colombia can not meet both domestic and foreign demand.

"We have informally received the blessing and approval of the Ministers of Finance and Agriculture and the Minister of Foreign Trade" to restrict coffee imports only to whole-sellers, mainly from Ecuador and Peru, Fedecafe boss Silva Luján told Radio Caracol.

The international coffee price fell last week by nearly 12 U.S. cents per pound, the manager of Fedecafé stated. "But the situation is not dramatic and the decrease in price was predictable".

Colombia has seen its exports and output shrink so far this year due to heavy rains, lower fertilizer usage and a program to replace older trees with new, more productive ones.
