Colombia's state-controlled oil company, Ecopetrol SA, found gas in a well drilled in the north-eastern province of Norte de Santander, the company said Wednesday.

The exploration well called Oripaya 1 yielded an output of 6.6 million cubic feet of gas a day, mainly methane gas, the company said in a statement. The field is located close to the border with Venezuela.

The well belongs to the contract Uribante and is 100% owned by Ecopetrol.

Ecopetrol is Colombia's largest company in terms of revenues and is 89.9% owned by the Colombian government.

Shares of Ecopetrol rose 2.1% Wednesday morning to a record high COP3,695 ($2.05).
