'La Negra Grande' receives Culture Award

Colombia news - Leonor Gonzales

Leonor Gonzalez Mina, better known as 'La Negra Grande', received the 'Grand Order of Cultural Merit' awarded by Colombia's Ministry of Culture on Wednesday.

Gonzalez Mina was the first Afro-Colombian artist who had success in the world of music. The 75-year old artist celebrates her 53rd anniversary of her career this year.

"I conquered the Colombian artistic scene and it was not easy. I was discriminated against, but I fought like a panther and now I am hugely satisfied with what I have accomplished", the singer said.

"Leonor Gonzalez Mina is a national symbol. Her outstanding artistic talent and her commitment to the social reality of the country, makes her an integral artist for a national project," Minister Paula Marcela Moreno said ceremoniously presenting the award to Gonzalez Mina.

Currently, 'La Negra Grande'  teaches music and singing classes in the public school 'Antonio Robles' in Robles, Southwest Colombia.
